Victoria Lim is from Tennessee (but she does not have a southern accent). She graduated from Belmont University with a double major in Chemistry and Mathematics. Her undergraduate research is comprised of product validation at Croda, Inc., synthetic organic chemistry at Vanderbilt University, and computational quantum chemistry at the University of Georgia. Her internship with Croda was through the American Chemical Society SCI Scholar Program , through which she evaluated the effectiveness of prototype personal care products containing Croda ingredients. While at Vanderbilt in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey Johnston, Victoria developed a robust enantioselective synthesis of an aryl glycine donor for use in Umpolung Amide Synthesis (UmAS) . Her work at the University of Georgia with Dr. Wesley Allen was on applying quantum chemical methods to investigate tunneling during conformational changes in glyoxylic acid. Between undergrad and grad school, she completed an internship at Merck, mentored by Brad Sherborne and Alejandro Crespo, where she benchmarked different computational methods for computing protein-ligand binding energies .
Victoria is a joint student in the Mobley Lab and the lab of Doug Tobias. Her main research is on the human Hv1 proton channel. Hv1 hyperactivity contributes to a number of maladies including breast cancer metastasis and brain damage in ischemic stroke. She computes relative binding free energies of small molecules in Hv1 using alchemical free energy perturbation with molecular dynamics simulations.
Victoria is highly involved in science and general communication. She is a writer for the Loh Down on Science, a radio show and podcast broadcasted on National Public Radio (NPR) and Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) . She is also the communications consultant for UC Irvine’s Graduate Resource Center to help students and postdocs prepare for presentations, job interviews, networking events, and English-speaking exams.
